The Jester holds a uniquely important position in Korpesh politics. For centuries, the Jester was no more than what it’s name implies, a jonguleur and entertainer who’s only job was to relax the monarch. It was not until the now legendary Marageth that the position changed. According to legend, Marageth realized one evening while practicing her card tricks an waiting for King Suelte to return from a war meeting about his ongoing campaigns against the Orc tribes in the west, that she had what even the highest ranking advisors, ministers, and Generals did not: near unlimited access to the King. Cautiously at first, but with increasing boldness, Marageth set about carving a position of influence out for himself.
The exact nature of the relationship between the Jester and the Monarch varies widely as individuals adjust the roles to their foibles. Some Jesters have served their liege as spymasters, chancelors, diplomats, advisors, and some even whisper, assassains. Some Monarchs have attempted to distance themselves from the Jester, and the breach in authority that they represent, but tradition is a difficult enemy to defeat. While the choice of a new Jester occurs during a huge festival where the hopefuls perform for the crowd and Monarch, backstage politics has much more to do with who is selected to fill the role than performance talent. Over the many years, the Guilds have begun to vie strongly to support and aid candidates in their quest to become Jester, hoping to control the power and access that it represents. While total domination is rare, it is almost unheard of for someone to gain the position without at least owing a few favors to various groups. The Nobles rarely engage in these attempts to control the Jester, as they are forbidden by law to dabble in the Monarch, and this law is fiercely enforced by Monarch-sympathizers eager to minimize any further eroding of their power.
Mayhew has retired, and has been replaced with Laemorius, Ssama’s candidate. In an odd turn of events, all three entertainment organizations own a piece of him in exchange for making sure the Wizard controlled Paulus did not end up wining the Jester Competition. It remains to be seen how much influence Laemorius might have.
